Baybay City, Leyte — Visayas State University (VSU) announces its university-wide five-day break tagged as “Wellness Week” for the faculty and students on November 23 to 27 through Memorandum Circular No. 104 Series of 2020 via the official Facebook page of the university on November 20, 2020.
The university emphasized that the said week is not a break from academic responsibilities but an opportunity for both faculty and students to recharge from the high demands of online learning.
In compliance with the civil service requirement on attendance, the said break does not cover the faculty of the university. However, they are allowed to apply for a work-from-home scheme in line with the university’s protocols.
The Wellness Week was an initiative from the VSU University Supreme Student Council Federation (USSCF), Office of the Vice President of Student Affairs and Services (OVPSAS), and University Student Services Office (USSO) through a survey on students which garnered more than 2,000 entries stating concerns and problems.
USSCF Student Regent Tisha Marie Cortez said that the survey’s goal was to check on students' welfare and hear out their concerns.
“Regarding the survey, our main goal for that was to check up on the students and hear from them. How they were doing so far during the flexible learning modality.” she said.
She added that the inspiration behind this initiative to push through the wellness week was to help students struggling with the current learning set-up.
“We saw that other colleges/universities had implemented a reading break/academic break, and after discussing the matter with the USSCF and VP for student affairs and services (who first shared the idea with us and was very supportive throughout), we concluded that an academic break might be a good way to help the students.” she added.
Vita-campus presidents, college presidents, as well as the Student Development and Welfare Committee also contributed to the promotion of this wellness week.
