Visayas State University (VSU) recognizes research-driven individuals in the university with their exemplary contributions to the field of research and celebrates their outputs in science and technology during the Publication & Intellectual Property Awards Night, on April 26, with the theme, “Alamdag,” at RDE Hall, VSU Upper Campus.
VSU President Edgardo E. Tulin expressed his recognition to the researchers in the university who published their outputs in different journals and challenged them to always search for truth in his opening remarks.
“I welcome everyone to this memorable event: Publication & Intellectual Property Awards Night. As part of the VSU’s 99th founding anniversary, we would like to highlight this event to give emphasis on research outputs as well as to recognize our researchers who have made it to the different journals in their respective fields of discipline. This event will not only honor our VSU faculty members for their great research accomplishments but also shed light on the significance of publishing research studies, as indicated for our theme for tonight: Alamdag - to shed light and to search for truth; there is truth when there is light,” Dr. Tulin stated.
On behalf of Dr. Maximo C. Aljibe, the guest speaker, Ms. Catherine Iglesias read his message on the significance of the research convocation in the institution and prompted other faculty members to engage in the field.
"Research is a springboard towards progress. If there is one thing that truly proves the highly cerebral nature of a career in the academe, it is research. So this event will provide concrete rewards to the efforts [of] these unsung heroes of our knowledge economy and hopefully motivate more faculty members [in VSU] to engage in research and publication." Dr. Aljibe stated.
Dr. Maria Juliet C. Ceniza concludes that research is a significant investment for the university.
"The measure of a good research publication would also be how [often] your publication is cited. The launch of the new guidelines, would mean more recognition for prolific writers and the university's faculty[UMs]. It is a significant investment for VSU, but still worth it because it gives the university a good reputation," she said.
Recently, VSU was announced as a Top 11 research institution in the Philippines by the AD Scientific Index (Alper-Doger Scientific Index)–a ranking and analysis system based on the scientific performance and the added value of the scientific productivity of individuals and institutions using H index, i10 index, and citation count criteria in Google Scholar.
This recognition is primarily because of the continuous efforts in research and innovation of the outstanding scientists and researchers in the university. At VSU, the most-cited scientist is Dr. Monina Escalada, from the Department of Development Communication (DDC) with the most popular cited article on the “Use of communication media in changing rice farmers’ pest management in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam.”
Moreover, Dr. Victor Asio, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Food Science (CAFS), and Dr. Janet Alexis De Los Santos, a faculty member of the College of Nursing (CoN), rank second and third spot, respectively.
Truly, this event is an implication that the university is considered a strong contributor to building the scientific literature.
