Baybay City— Visayas State University has announced that it will continue with the 2nd semester of SY 2019-2020, but will not require students to go back to its campuses.
This announcement comes as community quarantines are extended in many places, including Baybay City, where Mayor Jose Carlos “Boying” Cari has extended the General Community Quarantine until May 30, 2020.
VSU President Edgardo E. Tulin, on April 30, 2020, released a series of memos, including Memorandum Circular No. 46 S. 2020 entitled “Continuation of 2nd Semester SY 2019-2020 Without Residential/Face-to-face Instruction” in pursuant of the CHED COVID Advisory No. 6 dated April 13, 2020.
The VSU Board of Regents (BOR) approved the resumption of the 2nd semester without requiring students in all levels (elementary, high school, and college) except for graduating MS and PhD students residing in Baybay City to physically attend classes in the university.
The decision was made after a series of consultative meetings with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), other SUC Presidents, University Administrative Council (UADCO), VSU-COVID Task Force and the local Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) of Baybay City.
In the memo, Dr. Tulin emphasized that all faculty must give maximum consideration and leniency to all students especially for the graduating undergraduate students this year.
“Has the semester ended already? No, because there are still deadlines: June 15 for graduating students and June 22 for non-graduating students (see OP MC No. 46, S. 2020). We wanted to give enough time for students to submit requirements and for faculty to work on your grades. As always, maximum leniency and utmost consideration,” he said.
The memorandum also included a proposed plan of action for the completion of academic requirements of students and the reasons for the concerted stand of VSU for resuming the semester.
President Tulin has signed three more memorandum circulars that details the University’s next steps after April 30, 2020.
