Prof. Elsie Salamat, VSU Head of the Alumni Office, stressed that the affair was supposed to be an activity for the Alumni Homecoming. However, due to the Covid-19 restrictions, only a few people registered to join. With that, both events were done together for the faculty and staff, and students as VSU allows in-person classes.

According to Mr. Jeffrey Lloyd L. Cagande, the Chairman of the Alumni Run for a Cause, approximately 111 people registered. The proceeds from the event will be used to finance Peter Cajeric, a second-year Bachelor of Science in Agribusiness student, who regrettably lost his home and his parents during the landslide caused by typhoon Agaton.

“Girecommend ni siya sa USSO. After the onslaught sa Typhoon Agaton, dako jud ug damage adto sa Sitio Waterfall, Barangay Mailhi, Baybay City, Leyte… Niya ilang nakit-an nga si Cajeric jud ang most depressed nga student sa Agaton, among the list, “ said Mr. Cagande.

Moreover, Mr. Cagande preferred to raise funds through the said initiative because he saw that the number of bikers and runners was increasing in the community and it would be easier to accommodate a large number of participants compared to other sporting events.

With the help of social media, they were able to reach many interested people in and out of the VSU community. A senior BPEd participant, Angelica Joyce Alpeche, shared that she wanted to experience as many events as possible for her last intramurals in VSU. She even invited some of her friends after seeing the post about the event on Facebook.

“We are also glad that even though we’re still students, we are able to help someone in need, ” Alpeche utteredsaid.

Mr. Cagande had similar sentiments, “Engaging in activities such as Fun Run for a Cause is always a pleasant feeling because you are helping yourself as much as you are helping others. We don’t mind the cost, for as long as it has a transparent and impactful cause.”

This subsequent conduct of both events mirrors this year’s theme “Sálingkusóg”; the spirit of sharing one’s strengths with those in need and advocating not only for one’s interests and hobbies but also an avenue to alleviate people’s lives.

Clad with their race kits and a heart with a desire to help, the VSU Alumni and Community Relations Office (ACRO) conducted a “Run for a Cause'', to finance a VSU student victim of typhoon Agaton to continue his studies. It was simultaneously held alongside the Fun Run, a sportsfest attended by faculty and staff from different age brackets. The participants gathered early on October 19, Wednesday, at the Upper Oval to mark the start of the event.
