With a pool of over 200 aspirants across  the country, Amaranth’s Executive Editor,  Jerry V. Yubal Jr., along with other four outstanding Filipino youth leaders, has been selected to represent their advocacies in the One Young World 2024 Summit this September 18 to 21 in Montreal, Canada.

Yubal, along with Kabataan (SK) Chairperson  Rhoda May Ebad, Make It Safer Movement Coordinator Alyssa Belda, Yabong Philippines Founder Dun Abiera, and Chief Resident of Patients Services at Philippine General Hospital Dr. Princess Jeanne Gairanod,  is set to hear from renowned speakers, collaborate with peers, and build relationships with young leaders from around the world at this event.

Through Rappler’s call for participants last June, these selected five youth leaders  demonstrated exceptional leadership abilities, a defined purpose, and a steadfast commitment in tackling issues in their respective areas.

“The One Young World Summit aims to bring together young leaders from over 190 countries and more than 250 organizations, with the goal to accelerate social impact. It will be held for four transformative days featuring speeches, workshops and networking”,  as said by Yubal.

Further, the delegates in the summit will have the opportunity  to meet and learn from influential political, business, and humanitarian leaders such as the First Woman President of Ireland Mary Robinson, footballer Rio Ferdinand, economist Professor Muhammad Yunus, and Rappler CEO and 2021 Nobel Peace Prize Winner Maria Ressa, among others.

Yubal, who recently graduated from Rappler’s Aries Rufo Journalism Fellowship program expressed his thoughts on this upcoming big event, noting the importance of youth participation and community journalism as his advocacies.

“Among the five selected delegates from the country, I was particularly chosen as the campus journalist of the batch. When I applied for the opportunity, I bannered my advocacy in fighting disinformation. It was through my work as a student journalist and a fact-checker for Rappler that I got involved with this advocacy. And I hope to strengthen my skills in detecting and fighting disinformation through the summit so I can also impart what I learn to more people, especially my co-campus journalists”, Yubal said.

Moreover, Rappler will be hosting live community chats of this summit in various chat rooms in the Rappler Communities app led by the delegates to confer with their different advocacies. These live chat events will run from August 22 to September 13 in the said platform.

In line with this, Yubal will host an upcoming chat event titled “Paano natin mapapalawak ang paggamit ng Pilipino sa pagbabalita?” scheduled from August 30 at 6-7pm through Rappler’s Communities App.

This livechat  aims to explore and discuss the vital role of the Filipino and vernacular language in the field of journalism, and how this can encourage more student journalists to use them.
