The week-long intense showcase of sporting competition and regional camaraderie commenced for the first time ever as a tri-school host for the Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletic Association (SCUAA) Meet, from April 19-24 at Tacloban City.
Hosted by Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) together with Leyte Normal University (LNU) and University of the Philippines-Tacloban College (UPTC), the event united thousands of student-athletes in celebrating the “ONE SCUAA 8: Strengthening Unity Through Sports”, marking the solidarity for one of the region’s biggest events.
A Grand Welcome
A spectacular opening ceremony set the tone of the event, featuring 5,000 student-dancers from the Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU).
The performance, illuminated by vibrant LED lights, transformed the venue into a sea of color and signaled the beginning of the week-long event.
Days of Rampage and the Sudden Upset
Energy surged as the games began, making the court buzz with cheers of excitement and anticipation. As the opening matches not only tested preparation and strategy but also ignited the spirit of unity and rivalry that defines the games.
VSU Pythons made an immediate statement as they ramp up the medal tally on the first day, establishing an early lead. With the athletes from Arnis Team bagging the first medals of the competition racking 15 golds.
The second day, however, brought the first major wave of pressure as Pythons continued to take the lead.
In a surprising turn, the Baseball team was eliminated early, marking a tough moment for the delegation amidst their overall standing in the medal count. Despite their rigorous preparation, the team fell short in a high-stakes match, ending their run much earlier than expected.
This loss was a heavy blow to the delegation, serving as a reminder of the unpredictable and fierce nature of the regional competition.
On the third day of the games, the intensity reached new heights as the team delivered fierce and closely contested battles.
Determined to climb the ranks and secure a spot in the finals, each team fought with grit and coordination. While some were able to slither to the top, some lost their grip.
One fact stands, however: none refused to back down in such high-stakes matchups.
Making the VSU Pythons stood at the top of the ranks, hauling medals for the university’s trove for days prior to the end of regional sporting competition.
In an unexpected glide of momentum, hours before the closing ceremony, VSU slips into 2nd place, one gold less than LNU’s, and 4 golds more than that of BiPSU.
Another slip occurred, fueling the pressure to intensify as VSU sank another rank while the BiPSU surges past to 2nd as the end draws nearer.
For the athletes and spectators alike, this looming placement is a repeat of the 2024 EVR SCUAA Games where VSU ranked 3rd overall.
In a final clutch, the Pythons slithered back to 2nd place. Though able to climb back up, VSU was 4 golds short of taking home the championship trophy and glory.
Ending: Almost Home
The 39th EVR SCUAA Games officially came to a close on April 24 at the LNU ORC Quadrangle. Biliran Province State University emerged victorious after securing 87 gold medals and a total of 236 medals. Visayas State University finished 2nd with 83 golds and 168 medals overall, followed closely by Leyte Normal University in 3rd place, earning 80 golds and a total of 159 medals.
The ceremony concluded with the symbolic passing of the torch and banner to University of Eastern Philippines, the next host of the regional games.
This moment signified the continuation of the SCUAA legacy, as the responsibility of hosting was officially handed over, closing this year’s chapter while setting the stage for the next edition.
For the athletes, every rally carried the weight of their universities’ pride and as they pushed their limits with the shared goal of bringing honor to their university. And despite being unable to bring the championship trophy home, the VSU athletes’ passion and grit continues to burn, in hope that the next season will reap off the glory they have fiercely fought for.
While the competitions have ended, the friendships, gratitude, and sense of family built during the games remain—proving that even as the flames fade, the bonds formed will never truly be extinguished.
