A massive cleanup effort targeting coastlines forefronted by the Visayas State University (VSU) took place, with over 30 academic, dormitory, and youth organizations joined forces to combat the issue of marine and human wastes last April 19, at the seasides of VSU and nearby communities.

During the introduction of participating organizations, Dr. Dennis Peque, Vice President of Research, Extension, and Innovation, expressed the significance of the activity.

"This is not a one-time, big-time activity but to sustain the environment," said Dr. Peque.

Championing several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations (UN), several student leaders also joined the activity to promote causes such as climate action, clean water and sanitation, protection of terrestrial and aquatic life, and good health.

In an interview with AMARANTH, Kyle Andrey Ancog, President of the College of Veterinary Medicine - Supreme Student Council (CVM-SSC), shared his thoughts on how coastal clean-up contributes to the environment.

“I believe that such efforts may prove ineffectual if coastal residents continue to litter—thus, for me, it is also necessary to educate residents about responsible waste management practices and instill a culture of environmental stewardship,” said Ancog.

The clean-up drive primarily targeted three specific coastlines near the vicinity of the university namely Guadalupe, Pangasugan, and the VSU Beach.
