The College of Veterinary Medicine(CVM) officially unveiled its Veterinary Teaching Hospital (VTH) with a soft opening event at the VTH building, CVM Tuesday, November 29.

Dr. Daniel Leslie S. Tan, Vice President for Administration and Finance delivered the turn over in behalf of VSU President Dr. Edgardo E. Tulin, saying that this is a “milestone” for the CVM as one of the top performing colleges in the university.

In his speech, Dr. Tan emphasized the teaching hospital’s importance in adhering to the university’s vision of being globally-competitive.

“It not only represents the College of Veterinary Medicine’s rapid growth but also aligns with the university’s vision of being a globally competitive university.”

He further said that this development carries the hope for a “transformative impact” on the CVM faculty, staff, students, and the VSU community.

In an interview with Amaranth, Dr. Harvie Portugaliza, Head of the Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences, lamented the role that the teaching hospital will play for the students, the nearby communities, and the wider Region 8.

“This means that we are ready to serve the community. We are expanding our services not only within the VSU community but within the Region 8. Especially sa katong mga neighboring baranggay na hopefully ma-part pud sya sa extension, katong mga dili maka-afford sa mga basic services sa pet health, then the Teaching Hospital can do that,” Dr. Portigaliza lamented.

As a premier school for veterinary education in the Visayas, Dr. Portugaliza highlights the importance of this for the veterinary students of the college.

“Sa level sa students, it’s one way to train them sa basics skils sa clinical aspects of veterinary mediciene. The teaching hospital is a venue for them to learn in all aspects– improve their knowledge, improve their skills, and attitude towards the client.”
