Visayas State University Debate Society (VSU DebSoc) is on a roll as they took part in the return of the Eastern Visayas Debate Championship (EVDC) - Asian Parliamentary held last May 31 to June 2 at the University of the Philippines Tacloban College, Tacloban City, Leyte.
Geoffrey Ociones, Dhea Angela Capuyan, and Ephraim Phillippe Sarabia of VSU B bagged the Novice Finals Championship against SSU B while Dhea Angela Capuyan emerged as the Novice Finals Best Speaker of the said category.
Novice Finals is a category for teams who have less than a year of experience on debate tournaments and have no breaks in the Open Finals.
Meanwhile, VSU A composed of Den Michael Malayo, Lim Vincent Antonio, and Sam Josephus Biliran as well as Ryan Spencer Secadron as adjudicator had a good fight after four rounds of insightful debate and discussions.
VSU DebSoc Interim Deputy Prime Minister Sam Biliran stated that participating in the EVDC is already enough to show to the debate circuit in the Eastern Visayas that they exist and it is already an achievement.
“Winning not only amplified that presence, but further cemented our influence in the Eastern Visayas Circuit. It as well set precedence, insofar as there are indeed capable individuals in our university and that the passion for the craft is existing not just for VSU DebSoc but more importantly in our dear VSU in the many years to come,” Biliran added.
In addition, Mr. Beljun Enaya and Ms. Angelie Genotiva proudly shared the triumph as advisers of VSU DebSoc and Harriett Nabonillo, the Interim Prime Minister of VSU DebSoc who trained each team all throughout the tournament.
“Debate leads the students in promoting a healthy culture wherein students engage in a discussion, such as in the classroom, in the student assembly, or any situations that call for a discourse, instead of being passive that only hinders progress,” said Mr. Enaya.
This is the grand comeback of EVDC after five years aiming to reignite the burning passion of debating teams in various academic institutions in secondary schools and universities in Region 8. VSU DebSoc also seeks to host the next edition of EVDC and the revival of inter-collegiate debate tournaments in the university.
