The Visayas State University is among the 10 leading Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in the Philippines and ranked as a “reporter” according to the 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings with Ateneo De Manila University and the University of the Philippines topping the list in the country.
THE World University Rankings is among the most reliable and most diverse university-ranking bodies ranking 1,799 universities across 104 countries and regions in the world measuring 13 performance indicators from four areas including teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
David Watkins, head of data science at Times Higher Education, writes that while the "reporter" status is not ranked in number, it is an active participant in the ranking process and emphasized that their data will be used to feedback to respective universities on areas they are posed to improve on.
VSU has been recognized in recent years for its leading management system, academic quality, and research studies with scopes comparable to that of the world’s top universities.
Dr. Edgardo E. Tulin , VSU President, has committed his tenure as the chief steward towards the “going global” vision with its ongoing partnerships with top universities in Southeast Asia and Europe among others. VSU also continuously strengthens its academic, research and teaching capacities by sending both students and faculty to various international institutions to enrich their fields of expertise.
In his Teachers’ Day address, Dr. Tulin reiterated his commitment to placing VSU on the world stage.
“That’s why the many efforts that we have done for the last seven years of my administration is mainly about opening greater opportunities for our faculty members to obtain advanced degrees for their continued growth and development now that we’re operating in a time of a VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous) world,” Dr. Tulin said.
Among VSU’s recent accolades is its ranking 8th among the 366 HEIs ranked in the country in the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities last August 2022.
Commission on Higher Education Chairman Popoy De Vera lauded the recent increase of HEIs in the world rankings.
“The dramatic increase in the number of internationalized Philippines HEIs shows that our universities continuously benchmark themselves with the best universities in the world and are improving their programs, faculty and facilities to produce graduates that are globally competitive and industry-matched. In other words, an increasing number of Philippine HEIs are globally competitive and world-class,” said CHED Chairman Popoy De Vera.
VSU boasts its rapid development from a rural provincial high school in 1924 into a national leader in agricultural and environmental education and research in the Philippines.
