As the University Interdorm Student Body (UISB) open the dormitories to everyone, Visayas State University President Dr. Edgardo E. Tulin reminded the dormitory occupants about the purpose and importance of Open House, during its opening on February 15, 2017 at the VSU Convention Center.

“For dorm occupants, this would allow you to make friends with other dormitory occupants. And for those who are living outside dormitories, they would know how it is like living in a dorm,” he said.

In his speech, Dr. Tulin emphasized that living in a dormitory is a manifestation of your home away from home.

Talking from his own experience, Dr. Tulin testified that living in a dorm gives college students the values that they need.

“Living in a dorm makes you practice discipline. Imagine that you have to wake up early to do the cleaning. Also, in dormitory, there’s always companionship. You have your brotherhood or sisterhood that you could always rely”, says Dr. Tulin.

“If you have assignment especially in Algrebra, Chemistry or Trigonometry, you always go to the smartest in your dorm to ask for help. When you’re hungry, you just get rice from other occupants and even sometimes without asking permission,” he joked.

Dr. Tulin pointed out that life in dormitory is different from those who stayed outside the campus.

“Those things only happen in dormitory. And to tell you, it’s hard when students don’t have experience what it is like living in a dorm that’s why you [occupants] are fortunate to experience all these things,” he said.

“Your life in the dormitory is something that you should value especially when you get out in this university”.

More dormitories

As part of their commitment to give better access for accommodation, Dr. Tulin’s Administration is planning to build more dormitories for undergraduate, graduate and foreign students.

“We see an increasing number of students however we only have limited dormitories. That’s why we plan to build additional accommodation facilities so that those who wants to stay inside the campus will also have a chance,” Dr. Tulin said.

More students are expected to enroll next year since it will be the pioneering batch of K-12 Program.

The two-day Open House will end on February 16, 2017.
