The VSU Student Broadcasters Circle (SBC) earned the Best Radio Development Communication Program (FM) at the 2nd Cebu Metropolitan Catholic Mass Media Awards (CM-CMMA) for its radio magazine program, “Hadspads,” on October 4 at SM Seaside Cebu City.
Senior DevCom Students Zoe Maureen Tomaub, Ancient Cationg, and Katrina Cuesta and their advisers represented the organization at the awarding ceremony.
Said recognition marks the first of its kind for SBC, its affiliated radio station VSU DYDC 104.7 FM, and the VSU Department of Development Communication, where the student broadcasters are based.
Hadspads is a radio magazine program featuring three segments: “V-liba Uy,” a podcast that invites Viscan students as guests; “Balita sa VISCANto,” a news broadcast; and “Istoryang VISCAN Unsa,” a radio drama with commentary which airs every last Monday of the month through SBC’s Facebook page.
“We’ve got nothing to lose.”
That was how SBC President Zoe Maureen Tomaub described her motivation to pursue the program’s entry in the 2nd CM-CMMA.
When the awarding mechanics were sent to them by their advisers, the organization had aired only three episodes of “Hadspads,” however, the recognition SBC applied for required at least five aired episodes.
As the production team prepared for their internship around mid-year classes, Tomaub stated that they saw an opportunity to complete and air the program’s remaining two episodes while they still had time on campus, despite having no initial plans to enter the competition.
“Actually it was a juggle on our part, kay nag internship na mi. Syempre bisag in the middle of internship pag uli namo after work mag-edit pami sa mga episodes sa Hadspads,” Tomaub said.
She also shared that SBC had received no updates from CM-CMMA on its entry, thus, upon receiving the email notification regarding the results, came as a surprise to the organization.
SBC’s space on the airwaves
Joining competitions and award-giving bodies was never part of SBC’s original plan for “Hadspads,” as the program was initially created as only part of the organization’s objectives and its broadcasting initiatives through DYDC 104.7 FM.
Furthermore, to be nominated alongside Star FM Cebu’s “Energy Conservation Advocacy” of 95.5 Star FM Cebu, for Ancient Cationg, SBC’s chief of reporters, the recognition brought a mix of emotions, especially knowing that it marked SBC’s first award.
“Mixed emotions mao gyud na ang pinaka na feel sa tanan, kalipay nga kabuhi nga na shock pud kay wala mi ga expect. And of course syempre happy kaayo kay first recognition man siya sa organization,” Cationg said.
The team also shared that the program was re-established through one of their advisers, as it originated from its batch, with its name inspired by the French word “hodgepodge,” which refers to a mixture of different things, and adapted into “Hadspads” for its Bisaya-language production.
For SBC, “Hadspads” goes beyond entertainment by combining drama, information, and talent in one radio magazine program, offering the Viscan community a mix of content that showcases the versatility of radio broadcasting.
